TSA REAL ID Fees Begin February 1, 2026
Starting February 1, 2026, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will charge a $45 fee for travelers who do not have a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification and want to fly. This fee allows passengers to use the new TSA Confirm.ID system for identity verification, but it does not guarantee their identity will be verified or that they will be granted access to the airport's sterile area. Passengers are advised to have a REAL ID or a U.S. passport to avoid the fee.
Acceptable forms of ID (to avoid the fee)
- REAL ID-compliant driver's license or state photo ID
- U.S. passport or passport card
- DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- Permanent resident card
- U.S. Department of Defense ID, including those for dependents
- Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
- Foreign government-issued passport
What you need to know
- The fee: The fee is $45, paid online for the TSA Confirm.ID system.
- The timeline: This policy starts on February 1, 2026.
- Alternative verification: If you don't have a REAL ID, you can use TSA Confirm.ID to verify your identity, but you will be charged the fee.
- What this means: Paying the fee is not a guarantee of being allowed to fly. You may still face additional security screening and potential delays.
- How to avoid the fee: The best way to avoid the fee is to have a REAL ID or a U.S. passport for domestic air travel.
